What was the reaction of American soldiers when they first arrived to liberate the camps?

    Probably the same as those of the British soldiers when they went into Belsen. You can hear some of their reactions here:

    Disgust and horror. The American troops were outraged by what they saw, especially when they realized these were civilians and not POWs.

    In Dachau, American troops were so outraged that they executed German troops and camp guards who had already surrendered. They also apparently provided weapons to some inmates who also executed Germans.

    Which camps? Most were in the Soviet Zone.

    The same as Soviet, Canadian and British soldiers.
