The form of the head is the statement of the melody. It is usually in 32 bars with an AABA form but can vary. Let's just use Have You Met Miss Jones or Take the A train as examples. The first 32-bar chorus states the main melody or 'head,' musicians solos on the other 32-bar choruses, and most of the time the head or main melody is restated at the end to close the song. Sun Ship is not in the form of a regular standard. Some musicologists would classify this tune as avant-garde and others as free form. Avant-garde would have alternate forms and alternate rhythms, so not your garden variety AABA. Free form is actually no form at all, but a blank canvas for musicians to improvise on. Traditional jazz harmony and structure are not observed. Some musicologists state that avant-garde and free form are the same. After listening to it, I was not able to hear a discernible head and choruses such as AABA that I would find in a jazz standard that I have played. I have been playing jazz professionally for several decades and am also a music educator. I might suggest doing some research on this yourself, read what others have written, and form your own opinion. Compare it with other jazz that is labeled free form or avant-garde.
