Should we institute mandatory military service for those who are 18?

The military has produced its share of liberals. But the discipline and hard work learned during military service is a character-building advantage for many people who end up knowing the futility of complaining when there's work to be done.

That sounds like a pretty expensive social program. Can we afford to pay them all? There are probably about three or four million 18 year olds. That could triple our military size.

I don't think so. We don't need it, and we would lose a year of productivity per person so they can receive military training and probably never even do anything with it. It's too expensive to have every single person do that for a year.
