Think of functionalist theory as being an objective view of society. Think of conflict theory as being an emotional view of society. In order to subscribe to the emotional view, you have to reject the objective view.

Functionalism examines the purpose of institutions to understand social behavior. Conflict theory assumes there sources of conflict and power dynamics in everything it examines and tries to find ways of bringing down the predominant viewpoint as sinister because it is forced upon everyone by the ones with that supposed power. In other words, it is complete nonsense.
