How much do grades matter?

I m going to school for a Bachelor s in Programming and Software Development. When I apply for a future job, how much will grades matter? Say I master the skills needed and earn the degree, but get B s and C s because of having to write essays and such, will i be judged by grades or will they care more about my ability as a programmer?

Grades for a scholar are equivalent to doing a good job or a bad job in your chosen profession. Right now your "profession" is as a scholar, so low grades or failing grades are like getting a bad "Review" on the job. So if you want to command good starting salaries after you graduate, then you need to put the work in now to accomplish that. Partying all the time, and doing crazy s ...t now are things you'll truly regret down the road. You literally owe it to you parents to get good grades. They've denied themselves a lot over their lives to ensure that you get the education you need to be successful in your life. Give it some thought !!!

There are "prestige" firms that care about such things but they are often unforgiving and not worth your time unless YOU are a prestige-oriented person. When I was working for a small business, we worried that you HAD a degree because it meant you would complete a project (in this case, your schooling). The idea that you had perfect grades was useless to us because all that meant (for most Bachelor's degrees) was that you could parrot the coursework. We needed people who were able to handle problem analysis so we often imposed our own testing methods. We didn't want to see your grades. We wanted to see you think your way out of a paper bag.

Some companies have a minimum GPA for recent college grads. If your GPA is not above that minimum, your resume won't be circulated.

If you know somebody, or have a high demand skill, or you are from an "under represented minority" you might get around the low GPA.

Once you get out and have worked for a while, the GPA gets less important.

your grades determine how smart you are, and get your foot in the door.

unless you develop a reputation, you won't get far without good grades.

It depends on how impressed they will be when you apply.

I had a company in UK, with a few programmers. I did not care of ANY kind of paperwork the applicants presented!

I gave them a test on abilities to do the job I needed.

... and I had the best programmers!

The person who makes the hiring decisions is a person. Every person is an individual -- so maybe they didn't get such great grades. They usually won't look at your transcript. If they want to give you a programming test then they will do so.

You shouldn't list your grade on your resume. The purpose of your resume is to get you an interview -- not a job. They will want to see that you have extracurricular activities, and they will want to see that you had a summer job. It can be at a fast-food place. They just want to know that you know what it means to show up for work on a regular schedule.

Once you get the interview, then the most important thing is the ability to sell yourself. You may have to go on several interviews where you will fail. Consider those to be practice interviews.

Not every company wants A+ students -- they don't want to pay that much. Some companies might ask for your grades and decide to hire you BECAUSE your grades aren't that great -- they'll be paying you less.

But, after a few years, no one will ever ask for your grades again. They will see that you were employed as a programmer. So, then you can try to get a higher paying job.

TLDR: You can get a job, but lower pay.
