What is so great about Game of Thrones?

The theme is about power. What people do to get it, what people do to keep it, and how people use it. In both the books and TV series the characters are complex in that they are neither completely good nor completely bad; they are 3 dimensional characters. We get to see how the different characters react in the situations they are in. The author has carefully crafted each character so that they could be anyone in the "real" world. We can understand what motivates each character even if we disagree with them. In addition it is the characters who drive the plot, not the other way round. Just like us, each character has a core value which can be either a fatal flaw bringing about their downfall or overcoming obstacles. As for the TV series it was a well written adaptation of the books, well acted, a clearly defined plot. While some of the visual effects were spectacular they can be considered as icing on the cake. Although the setting suggests a medieval period this story could take place at any time or place and it still would work. The theme and characters are timeless and universal.

It has excellent production values and good acting. The story and the writing in particular, are not good.

Complex, lots of blood, 80% kill ratio, dragons, wolves.

I got bored with it quickly so I didn't think it was that great (series or books).

It's about power, love, revenge and humanity.

No definite right or wrong, it lets us to think.

It's a very well-written, well-filmed drama series, with engaging characters, brilliant acting throughout, stunning special effects and a plot which makes most people feel completely involved.

Yes, it's violent, but that wasn't a problem for me - or most others.
