Jimmy was gossiping and the story teller didn't care. The song takes place in a trial where the suspect, a slave, claims that his abusive owner died after a fly bit the owners horse causing the horse to buck the owner which killed him.

Wikipedia says "On the surface, the song is a black slave's lament over his white master's death in a horseriding accident. The song, however, can be—and is—interpreted as having a subtext of celebration about that death and of the slave's having contributed to it through deliberate negligence."

Sounds corny to me, which is why I don't care.
