Is melatonin safe for dogs?

I often take melatonin gummies to help me sleep. While I wouldn’t purposefully let my dog eat people-medicine, she got up on the table (a bad habit I’m trying to train her out of) and nearly ate my evening medicines/vitamins, one of which was said melatonin. She’s a 35-45lbs blue healer if that affects anything. I don’t think I’d ever have a reason to give her a sleeping aid, but I just want to know what to do if she eats one, specifically a people one, by mistake. Do nothing? Vet trip? Etc.

Thanks!

Melatonin has been used in dogs to treat certain disorders, including hair loss disorders. So it can be used in dogs. Melatonin is generally considered a safe drug and there are few reported side effects in dogs besides lethargy, however, the dose ingested is the important part. So if your dog eats one gummy, it's possible that nothing will happen. If the entire bottle is eaten, symptoms may be seen. If you take the dog to the vet right away once you notice the melatonin missing, they can induce vomiting quickly and get it out.

It'd be better to give it NyQuil, five tablespoons of it.

Put YOUR medications away in a drawer or other safe place where the dog cannot get to them.
