What could have caused arachnids to evolve from arthropods?

Update:

Wikipedia says "The evolution of spiders has been going on for at least 380 million years, since the first true spiders (thin-waisted arachnids) evolved from crab-like chelicerate ancestors."

Okay, what caused them to evolve from those crab-like things?

Arachnids are arthropods. They have not evolved to be different enough to be classified in a different phylum than other arthropods. They evolved from a primitive arthropods. The reason is that form follows function. The ancestor of arachnids was acting differently than its own ancestors, as it tries to adapt to the environment that is changing. In doing so, new traits that are more appropriate for the new way it is behaving become fixated.
