How do I up the volume for music played on my laptop or iPad?

Update:

I bought 400W speakers, but the volume coming through the speakers is no higher than through the laptop or iPad whose digital audio files are the source of the music being played on the speakers.

I want to be able to play along on drums to music I play from my digital devices. But since no-one seems to have a stereo hifi these days, everyone plays music sourced from digital devices, how do they get the volume up - way up?
