How many stores did Sears have at its peak -- which I believe was some time in the 1970s, back before the Big Boxes like Home Depot?

When its Chapter 11 filing was announced, Sears had nearly 700 stores open in the U.S., compared to 3,500 Sears and Kmart when they merged in 2005.
