Can thinking of nothing be a form of meditation? If so, does it refer to a specific kind of meditation?

We're always thinking of something. Thinking of nothing is thinking of something.

It sounds like what you're talking about is mindfulness meditation, which quiets the mind. It involves focusing one's attention. It doesn't put a complete stop to our mental processes but it quiets the chatter of our internal monologue.

People often say, "I'm not good at this. My mind wanders too much." The thing is, it's impossible for us to focus our attention on any particular thing indefinitely. Also, we can gradually train our minds to focus on something longer and longer, as the video below points out.

This is my description of mindfulness meditation based on the best-seller Altered Traits by veteran researchers Goleman and Davidson and some websites on deep meditation.

Phase 1: Bring the focus away from the mind to the senses, with awareness of physical sensations, especially breathing. The mind is quieted by letting thoughts come and go, not getting involved with them. Whenever one is distracted, the thing to do is return to awareness of the breath. The result is relaxation and a tranquil state of mind.

Phase 2: This is the part people are skipping. Bring the focus back to the mind and *enjoy the tranquility*.

Also, think about using mindfulness in daily life, which can improve your moods and prevent accidents. A good habit - respond mindfully to moments of stress, slowing your breathing and grounding yourself. Simple things like doing the dishes can be a kind of meditation. Mindfulness in daily life makes us sensitive to subtle changes of mood and cues us to use our coping methods.

Although there's little scientific evidence for apps, their enormous popularity says that they're doing something good for people. The most popular is Headspace, which makes use of clever animations to teach concepts.

A reviewer says that the best one is Mindful Life Project and it's absolutely free. The most popular app, Headspace, is the most expensive but it has a 30-day trial you can use over and over. Calm has a free breathing exercise that's really useful if you have trouble with anxiety.

Best with a single word to focus your mind on

Called a mantra, it can be a colour or number.

Or something that helps your mind relax

And it’s ok to change your mantra as you go.

    Thanks

    Very best wishes

Indeed thinking of nothing is a form of meditation and in fact is the ultimate form of meditation as The Word of God (The Tree of Life, Light, Love, Wisdom, Understanding and Knowledge) tells us in James 4:13.
