Why am I being called a 'Gringo' while living in a majority white nation?

I am pretty sure that 'Gringo' refers to white foreigners that go to Latin American nations. Regardless of interpretation, it means foreigner. I am not a foreigner. I was born here.

    As a white atheist I thing gringo sounds cool, just as infidel does.

    You are most likely being called "Anglo", not "Gringo". If someone referred to you as "Gringo", they were going out of their way to make sure you understood that you were being dissed, because they were pretty sure even YOU would understand THAT.
