For the last two years the state of Alabama has kept my income taxes because of a bill that I didn't pay for of a privately owned ambulance?

I always thought that it was illegal to hold income taxes for a privately owned business that is owed money. They sent me a letter and on the bottom it says that I can contest this. any advice on how I should word the letter would be greatly appreciated!

No. They have applied your tax return to the bill you owe the STATE for an ambulance that responded to a 911 call.

If you owe the money, pay the bill.

Interesting question. Odds are probably your side, but the cost of court expenses wouldn t be worth it. Was the private ambulence on contract with the city or community where you live? City may have a case there!

It's called garnishment. Federal Government will withhold tax refunds for certain debts, such as unpaid child support. State Governments differ on which debts they will with hold tax refunds. Apparently your state allows garnishment for unpaid ambulance bills. To contest a garnishment, you will need the services of an attorney.
