How stupid was it for the US women to hug the goalkeeper after she saved the penalty shot, if they had touched the ball with their hands?

while they were hugging the goalkeeper, the referee could have awarded another penalty shot

Update:

The goalkeeper was smart. She put the ball between her chest and her arms so it is not easy for her teammates to touch the ball with their hands.

What is wrong with showing gratitude for the GK to keep you in the game. The keeper had thought this through and she showed that she is knowledgeable. The ref would have been right to award a pemalty.

No, it was set up in advance that they'd win the game so the ref wouldn't have called for a penalty kick no matter what happened. The whole game was fixed for the USA to win which is why they will win in the finals too.

There are 17 official laws in soccer, In referee classes, however, we teach 18. Law 18 is common sense. Awarding a PK based on the circumstances you describe would be a major violation of common sense.
