Can you explain this encounter?

So I used to work with mentally disabled clients. I was basically at their apartment all the time. Now it was government owned and very cleanly run down. Kind of scummy if I’m being honest. Well one day these two little kids (couldn’t have been older than 12) came knocking on the door. When I answered it, they looked sad. I asked if there was anything I could help them with and they just explained to me that their mom had just passed away. I gave them my condolences, as would anyone. They then asked if I lived here and I told them no. They later asked if they could come inside, to which I also said no. I explained that because this wasn’t my house, I wasn’t allowed to let anyone in. Then they kind of just walked away.

After this happened I was automatically suspicious, but I can’t quite put the story together. I assume they wanted money but they never ended up asking for any. Any thoughts?

Because they were kids it's bothering you for several reasons. What I would have done is told them to wait a minute, shut the door and phoned the police. They could have been run-aways, they could have been looking to steal because dad's a druggie/alcoholic and a single parent - who knows why they were there but that's something for law enforcement to get involved in. Why would a single parent let preteens run wild like that? Very suspicious to me no matter how you slice it but in any event you were there for your client so you did the right thing in protecting your client's best interest.

Maybe they needed you to call someone for them. Maybe they were hungry, sad. You could have asked about their dad or who was their guardian. If they needed you to call someone. They could stay in the hallway. Ask more questions next time.

They might have been sent to scam the mentally disabled person, but it's not always the case. Maybe they visited that person a lot. Another good reason to ask questions.

    Yes.

I think your conscience is wearing at you for turning them away.

You should have asked more questions. I think they were afraid of something or hungry. They were obviously seeking refuge.

    Way to NOT help.

    How's that conscience treating you?
