Spending is a problem he's going to have to fix. But it would require shutting the government to actually do it because your side likes the spending and won't make deals without it.

Trump was a Democrat from liberal New York City for most of his life. As far as being a conservative goes, that means not initiating rapid and disruptive change. Change should occur gradually. The debt is reduced in two ways. One is to collect more revenue than we spend (create a surplus) and apply that to the debt burden. The other way it to grow the economy and thus make the debt a smaller percentage of GDP.

Rapid shrinking in spending would disrupt the system and could crash the economy. The debt as a percentage of an economy that has crashed and thus shrunk would be greater, so it is necessary to gradually cut spending where possible.

You can literally say the same thing about most Presidents before him. That they had the highest debt spending because they all added to the debt.
