why does painters tape cause paint to peel off wall?

So I think there may be something wrong with the paint in my house. I tried using painters tape to get clean lines while painting my trim, After painting I pulled off the painters tape while the trim paint was still wet and the paint on my wall came off with the painters tape..... Epic fail.....is this normal or is there something wrong with my wall / paint. I used the normal 8 dollar a role 3M tape from Lowes and the tape was new....

It's probably past poor preparation of the walls prior to painting in the past. If you don't make sure the paint has something to completely adhere to, this is the result. And also rushing the removal of your tape this time around. Leave well alone until all surfaces are completely dry.

it sticks to the paint on the wall and if the paint is old it peels

Paint definitely is cheap or the people who painted the wall the couple times prior haven't ever scraped the previous paint off, making it easier and easier to chip.
