Can I spay my dog who is still in heat but already stop bleeding?

Hi there. My dog started her heat cycle earlier than expected (after 4 months instead of 6). We have her scheduled to be spayed next Saturday (10th). Her bleeding stopped already today (4th), giving one week until her surgery. Would the surgery be risky for complication considering that she is still in heat but already stopped bleeding. We would like to keep the schedule because there is long holiday and I would be able to stay home to care for her but at the same time I am worried it would be dangerous. Thank you.

Update:

Thank you so much for all your answers. I asked the vet before and she said it's ok we can go ahead with the surgery. She told me it's fine, no different. But I kind of not believing that there is no risk since all the internet said otherwise but I do not know what is the risks. Thanks for explaining why it would be more risky.

It would be a messy surgery cause everything down there is swollen with an excessive about of blood. A week may take down the swelling enough so that the Vet can do a clean spay. You need to discuss this with your Vet.

Talk to your vet who is going to do the spay. See what they say.

I have heard that a dog can be spayed while in heat but it is a bit riskier.

This really should be discussed with your vet. The best time for spaying is normally mid-way between seasons, when the repro. system is 'shut down'.

If she's only 4+ months, I'd NOT go ahead with a spay in any case, preferring to let the growth plates close first. My previous vet wouldn't spay my Whippet at 6 months (before her first season) saying it would be better for her to have a season first. As it happened, she hadn't come in by 11 months, so I asked him to go ahead, which he did. And she was fine.

Talk to your vet about this but unless there's a medical emergency needing her to be spayed (pyometra being one), I'd wait. It would be good for somebody to be there for at least the 10 days after spay surgery, when the stitches can be taken out so a 'long weekend' isn't going to be long enough to be with her in any case.

Call the vet on Monday and ask. Each vet may give you a different answer. They *may* do it if she has stopped bleeding, and they may choose to wait.

Well i can only tell you what my vet told me and that's to wait 2 months after her first heat.Personally i would wait till the dog is full grown around 11/2 to 2 years of age when the growth plates have closed
