What does 6/2(1+2)=?

The answer is 1. People need to stop putting extra math symbols in equations. This is not 6 / 2 x (1+2). You cannot add extra multiplication symbols to the equation. Just as 2(a+b) is not 2 x (a + b), 2(a + b) = 2a + 2b. I would hate to see those who say the answer is nine in a chemistry lab doing experiments. KABOOM!!!

Could be :-

1)

(6/2) ( 1 + 2 ) = 3 x 3 = 9

or

2)

6 / [ 2 ( 1 + 2 ) ] = 6 / 6 = 1

the correct answer is nine use PEDMAS

It is the same as 3(3) = 9

I don't know how to get these stupid expressions to go away and have people stop asking them.

The fact is that expressions like these are just fodder for people (who don't even fully understand the rules of order of precedence) to debate endlessly on Facebook and elsewhere on social media.

Mathematicians know the correct interpretation with our given rules should be:

6 / 2 × (1 + 2)

= 3 × 3

= 9

The best thing people could do, if they have an expression like the one shown is to just use a fraction bar (vinculum) which does imply grouping.

Or if you want to continue to use the slash (solidus), be sure to group the last part in parentheses:

6 / [2(1+2)]

If you want the division done first, there is no problem in adding extra parentheses to explicitly show the grouping. Even though the standard rules of precedence would mean that anyway, you can avoid the whole debate if you show it as follows:

(6/2)(1+2)

See? No more problem, right?

2(1+2) = 2x3=6

6 over 6 = 1,no remainder.

Answer = 1

I see mass confusion here,,, sequential steps follow:

> (1+2) =3

> 2 times 3 =6

> 6/ = divide 6 by > 6

> it goes one time.

6/2(1 + 2) = 9

some will say 1 & some will say 9....which is why one should use (..) , [...] , {...} to make it clear.......( 6 / 2 ) ( 1 + 2 ) = 9 and 6 / (2(1+2)) = 1...the 1st is preferred
