Simplest society: hunter/gatherer. Sex among consenting adults is tolerated. Promiscuity is the rule. Monogamy is not practiced. Men have sex with multiple women, and women are allowed to have sex with any men they want. Men have to bond with one another to hunt and defend the group for territory. No room for jealousy or monogamy.
Agricultural society. Invention of agriculture allows men to raise their own families by growing crops on a plot of land. No need to share their women with other men because there is no longer any need to hunt cooperatively. Children are raised by father and mother instead of being raised communally. Men now demand their women to stop having sex with other men because whenever male parental investment is needed, cuckoldry becomes a no-no.
Villages. Agriculture increases the population and people are crowded into villages. Law enforcement against adultery and theft is needed because otherwise it is not possible to live in safety in close proximity to one another. Men must once again defend the village against outsiders that may come in and rob people.
Tribes. As the population increases further, different villages that are close relatives band together to be more powerful than a single village.
As population expands further, nations and even empires may come into existence. The rulers try to justify their powerful and privileged positions by claiming that they are gods. The Roman Empire for example adopted Christianity because they know that it can be used to control the people. Similarly, communists outlaw other religions because the communist leaders want to control the people by worshiping communism. Fellow communists are "comrades" and those who are not communists are "anti-revolutionary" traitors.
