Depends on your definition of "important".

Some people consider the 4 cardinal phases (new, first quarter, full, and last quarter) to be the only ones that matter.

    Important to whom?

No phase of the moon has any greater intrinsic importance than any other

There are only 4 phases in quarters separated by new and full moons. Waxing and waning, gibbous and crescent.

Probably the most noted is the new moon, the point of conjunction with the sun and on the ecliptic, when solar eclipse takes place.

I'd say the full moon is my favorite phase. Its spectacular brightness and "size" tells it all: that we have a celestial body almost as big as a rocky planet and has been orbiting us for hundreds of million years. When I look up and see that overwhelming view, the first thing that comes to my mind is we have a planet in our neighborhood.

The major phases of the moon — new moon, first quarter, full moon, last quarter and next new moon — occur, on average, about 7.4 days apart.
