If someone is in the process of becoming a legal citizen of the United States, can they live in the US while doing it?

And please site your source so I know what’s true and what’s not

    you have to live in Indiana to become a legal Indiana citizen.

    yes. you HAVE to live in the us before becoming a legal citizen. You get a visa that allows you to legally work and live in the country without being a citizen. It's basically the same for any country.

    You are REQUIRED to live in the USA before you become a citizen.

    The first step towards citizenship is to become a "permanent resident".

    Why would you commit to naturalization and citizenship if you don’t live there first and try it out???

    Most foreign nationals have a Visa/green card , which must be renewed if they’re to stay.

    I've never heard of them having to stay outside the country during the process.

    (Excuse me but isn't the word "cite" rather than "site"? A site is a place, a noun. Cite is a verb.)
