You have learned a valuable lesson.
You should never type for an extended period of time without periodically manually saving a document- every 15 minutes or so. DO NOT depend on automatic saves. Ctrl-S will save you. Word will prompt you to save a document when you close it if you have made a change in the doc (even if you have printed the doc without any changes).
Also, save important documents in more than one location- your HD, a cloud location, and possibly a USB drive. Remember, it's not IF a hard drive fails, it's WHEN.

It does by default, but if you've turned it off, its in the settings menu.
