Not surprising. Many people do not like reptiles, calling them creepy crawly things. I have seen people in some parts of the southwestern USA swerve their vehicles while driving, so they can run over turtles that are on the road. As a teenager, I killed a gecko myself. It was making noises and I found it behind a wooden box hung on the ball. I caught it easily because it was day time and geckos are nocturnal animals that are sleepy during the day. I killed and preserved it by putting it in alcohol as I did not want it to keep making noises. Back then I also saw kids drop turtles from several stories up to the ground below. People can be cruel.
