Is it normal for a general residential contractor or handyman to have a difficult schedule and not know when they can come over?

Here lies the problem with general residential contractors and their time lines: they always, through no fault of their own, come across unexpected complications/additional work, which makes them behind schedule.

Homeowners typically hire a contractor to do a certain job. Then, when the contractors are there, the homeowners will either add more work to the job order or when the job is being done, the contractor may find additional problems behind walls or in floors that require additional work...which takes more time.

I know. I recently had an old section of my house that was a former summer cottage worked on. I had the old walls removed to the studs. Come to find out, once the interior walls were removed, it needed additional framing, more insulation and some electrical rewiring...which took more time. Then, after seeing all the new walls and windows, the old floor looked horrible, so I had a new oak floor installed....more time. You get the idea.

So, yes, it is normal for contractors and handymen to have their schedules blown out of the water due to unexpected and unplanned work that needs to be done before the job can be buttoned up.

Try a contractor that can make time in his/her busy schedule for your project.

what's normal is that they don't know exactly how long any given job is going to take. and with transit time being dead time [unpaid], they don't want to have to come back to a job the next day because they need to be at your place. [The salesman, however, is a lot better at predicting his timing ...]

Yes, it's normal if it is a small company or just one person. There are a lot of variables and it is difficult to gauge how long a job will take to finish. All kinds of delays can pop up. Also, even if they did give you a day to come they would have to be vary certain. Otherwise, you may have taken the day off from work only to get a call that they won't be able to make it.

Larger companies have more available labor to meet promised schedules.

Yes, because sometimes they gauge jobs by the weather, or by income to buy materials to do the next job.

I had this issue all summer long and it was a hot mess. The landlord was given a freed up budget to get a lot of work done in the apartments but where's my peaceful living? It seems they were there every 3 days. I'd get notices that they will coming either M-F I mean, can you give me a day??? I was told that they are so busy fixing apts so they can't tell me when they were coming.

I finally told them, enough! and I haven't seen them since. lol

Perhaps your complex is doing the same thing, granted a free budget. Outside contractors are usually hired for important jobs that need to be done like fixing the electricals in your walls or putting in a fire alarm, these things have to be done. I'm sure they coming over will slow down. I was getting both contractors and maintnece men over like twice a week. It was nuts with no particular day given.
