Should a band or a singer adapt their style to continue making success?

In your opinion, should the bands stop playing when they are not at the top anymore or should they adapt in order to survive.

    That depends on their goal.

"At the top" is a goal where one has to cater to the changing tastes of the public.

"Good music" is a goal where one's style will develop and change, driven by the artists not by the market.

(There is plenty of room between "continue to survive" and "be at the top".)

Great bands, like the Beatles, change through time. Bands like Boston did not change at all and they faded away.
