Should I get the Apple Watch series 4 or five as a first time smart watch user?
Just wondering which series would be better for a first time user

The always on display in the series 5 is a huge deal for a watch, but other than that there's not a whole lot of practical difference. It just depends on how budget sensitive you are and if that feature matters to you. I don't care for how the older apple watch screens turn on and off all the time, but I don't think these watches are worth much more than $200 which is why I won't be getting one. Regardless always remember designer watch bands are available on Amazon for much less so always go for the cheapest base model.
