Reserving a place well in advance offers you a lot more choices and a lot more control. So people pay more. Booking today means that you will take whatever they happen to have leftover, the stuff they are eager to get rid of for whatever price they can get. $51 is a heck of lot more than $0, even if they're taking a loss.
