No, this is a wild animal and should never be domesticated. When setting a pet for any ch ild, it's important to do extensive research and make sure they know what they're getting into - even a hamster is a lot of work. They need a cage that is much larger then what pet stores will sell (at least 450 square inches of floor space), tons of toys and enrichment, the correct sized solid wheel, a very special diet and 6" + of bedding.

These will usually only survive for a few months and at most, around 13 months. They have an unbelievable metabolic rate and need to stay warm. They can starve to death in only two or three hours. This is a very bad pet for anyone, plus, I doubt you will get one as they only live in Ireland and may not be allowed in your country.

Very possible, but these small animals are not for the beginners or children.
If you so much as overlook anything in their keeping needs, you do nothing more than kill them.
They are cute, but they can bite like most small animals.
These also fall under USDA laws regarding exotic wildlife so you need to check your local laws for legally keeping them.
Personally, I suggest you reconsider. There are many other small animals better suited and legal as pets.

Ask your girlfriend for her input. I also find it unusual that you are in Junior College, a recent high school graduate, and have a son.
