How does impeachment work?

Now that Pelosi has announced the inquiry on Trump, I'm curious what happens next.

Not looking for political opinions here, just facts. Thanks!

The House votes for impeachment and then it's up to the Senate to try the case. It requires a 2/3 super majority in the Senate to convict.

Investigations (hearings) are pursued to identify any crimes and to obtain and document the evidence of those crimes. If crimes and abuse of power are seen to be good cause to remove the president, there is a bill of impeachment presenting the charges that has to be submitted for vote and get approved by the House. If approved in the House, the Senate has to hold a trial, with the entire Senate acting as the Jury. A two-thirds vote is required to convict (to remove the charged person from office).

It is much like a criminal procedure: the police (the House committees) investigate the crime, and present the evidence to a prosecutor (the full House), who decides if there is sufficient evidence to go to trial. If so, the charges are presented to the accused and a trial is convened (in the Senate). The Senate trial decides guilt or innocence of the accused.

First you have to have an impeachable offense.

This is an impeachment inquiry which has already been in effect. Pelosi will commission a group of Congressional members to begin gathering evidence that may demonstrate that the President need to be impeached for High crimes and misdemeanors. If they should gather substantial evidence then they will present the evidence to the rest of the House members and call for a vote. If enough members vote to impeach then he will be impeached. Which means the House will have voted to have the Senate begin hearing to determine if 2/3 of them believe the President should be removed for the reasons stated by the House. The Senate has never voted to do so and this is a Senate that has a majority of support for the President.

It's a waste of time, money and resources. Which is exactly what the Democrats want.

It goes to Congress for discussion and a vote. They will need 20 republicans to side with the democrats, and they can't agree on what day it is.
