If you can order online, they don't CARE where you are when you place the order.

That is not the store limiting you. That is so you can filter how far you're willing to drive.
Last Christmas Williams-Sonoma screwed up something I ordered for a gift. When I called customer service they said it was too late to ship it again but I could pick it up in-store. Yes, they wanted me to drive from Seattle to Spokane which is over an 8 hour drive round-trip.
The store doesn't care how far away you are or if you're ordering something that your Aunt Betty is going to pick up three states away.

they use it to avoid fake orders...
If someone wanted to screw with you, they could place 100 orders and never pick them up...get refunds on their credit card...

Who would be stupid enough to place a pick-up order with a pick up location that is too far away to be able to get to without difficulty ?
