I need some help with physics?

You are standing next to the edge of a canyon when you exert superhuman strength  and throw a ball straight up at a velocity of 456 m/s. You see it hit the canyon floor 145.5m below. What is the TOTAL time the ball spends in the air?

    y = y0 + v0 t - 1/2 g t^2

    or

    1/2 g t^2 - v0 t - (y0 - y) = 0

    imposing y = 0 on get

    4.9 t^2 - 456 t - 145.5 = 0

    t = 46.69 s (neglecting the negative solution)
