What are your thoughts on buying a laptop, touchscreen all in one desktop, or a desktop?

Laptop is portable if you need that, but lacks performance unless you really need it and are willing to pay lots of $. Upgrades are minimal, repairs can be costly or even impossible.

Desktops have performance, but need monitor, keyboard, mouse, and power cord. Not as expensive, usually. Can be upgraded and repaired fairly easily.

All in one desktop has none of the best features of either one, and all the bad features of both.

Source(s): I have 8 all in ones (mostly old iMacs) and 6 laptops (all Windows, most are old), and 19 desktops (all Windows, most are very old).

My thought is to purchase what works better for you. I prefer desktops since I like to be able to build, customize, upgrade, and repair them. I also use my laptop when I'm on the go, but my laptop isn't nearly as customizable as my PC is.

I don't really like touch screen computers. In some instances, they are beneficial, but for what I mostly do it is really annoying since most of my programs aren't optimized for touch screen navigation.

All-in-ones look cool, but that's just about it for me.

I have what I want and don't need to shop for any of those. By the time I'm ready, though, they'll have something more advanced than any of that. For you, think hard about how you intend to use your machine. You're not carrying a desktop around with you. Maybe you can buy a desktop touchscreen all-in-one, *and* a tablet to carry, if you find one better than your phone.

there are pros and cons to all of them. i wouldn't get a touch screen though, that would just leave fingerprints. unless it was a specific tablet like an iPad. but not an all in one monitor.

i currently have a laptop. though is seven years old. it still runs fine, but am in the market for a new PC. i really don't take my laptop with me on the go or even around my home. so it stays pretty stationary. i'm thinking of getting a desktop since they are usually cheaper to build or even a pre built one. especially if you plan on using it for gaming. desktop obviously gives you more room to upgrade and add on later. laptop has its limitations on what you can do. but if you NEED the portability, school, take it to work, etc, then you need a laptop.

i say if you NEED it portable, get a laptop. if you don't, get a desktop. then if you need a portable device, get a tablet or a laptop as a secondary PC to work on. you can get them for good prices if you know when and where to look. especially with the holidays coming up, there will be sales.

"all in one desktop" is a misnomer. What you're actually paying for is a non-portable laptop. Unlike a real desktop computer that has more powerful hardware, can be upgraded and maintained for decades... all in one computers are designed to become obsolete and need to be replaced every few years. They also tend to use laptop hardware instead of desktop components.
