    Only Americans call it egg plant. The rest of us know there is no egg in it, so call it aubergine... Like the colour

    The shape gives it the name.

    Oddly enough the more elongated avocado seems to have an egg like aroma to me.

    It’s a plant that holds eggs very well hence why it is called eggplant

    Called eggplant by early explorers because the "fruit" resembles a large (like an ostrich) bird egg!

    Because of its shape, and while you probably have only seen a purple one, they do come in white, and in fact at first, that was the eggplant of choice.

    You've been bamboozled. They are called eggplants by the Europeans because the shape and size are similar to goose eggs so if you want eggs, buy the separately.
