A polar molecule has a net dipole moment. That means that the vector sum of all of the individual bonds dipoles adds up to a non-zero value. In a nonpolar molecule the net dipole moment is zero, usually because the molecule is symmetrical.
Therefore, a simple rule of thumb: Symmetrical molecules are nonpolar, and asymmetrical molecules are polar.
H2O ............. bent ... asymmetrical ... polar
NH3 ............. trigonal pyramidal ... asymmetrical ... polar
CCl4 ............ tetrahedral ... symmetrical ... nonpolar
KCl .............. not a molecule ... has no molecular geometry ... it is a network solid ... polar or nonpolar does not apply.
