"Hitfilm Express"

The free version is very capable and can do most things you are likely to need.
They sell ad-on to enable extra features but I've never needed any.
The only problem I have had is with some oddball MP4 files that did not conform to the MP4 spec (an invalid audio format) - I ran them through handbrake to change that to fit the MP4 AAC standard and then hitfilm imported them OK.

I downloaded a free copy of VLC for playing any movie or video file. It can play anything.

Adobe Premiere Pro but it's about $240. I have to admit Windows Movie Maker was not bad for free.
