Is craigslist a good place to get a pet? ?

I would not trust anyone selling or giving away pets on craigslist.  If I wanted a cat or kitten I would check local shelters or rescue groups FIRST.  If I wanted a purebred cat, I have reputable breeders I can contact.

Cats on craigsist are real, but there are also scams out there. 

Any time you get a cat or kitten outside of a shelter or reputable breeder you are taking on a risk.  You have no idea if the animal is healthy or what their temperament is. 

Once you get this kitten go straight to the vet and get a full health screening, including for FeLV and FIV, and internal parasites.  At the vet be sure to get some flea treatment too.  If the cat isn't spayed or neutered you will need to schedule that too.  If they aren't up to ate on vaccines or if you don't now the cat will need those too.

If you were to adopt a kitten from the local shelter, they will come with a guaranteed clean bill of health, spayed or neutered, and fully vaccinated.  All for the adoption fee.  This is much more expensive if you were to get a random cat from someone on craigslist or from a breeder.  At least with a reputable breeder the kitten is healthy and up to date on vaccines.

Craigslist isn't a good place, you don't know if the cat is healthy or if it has had its shots. And 1am is too late for her be bringing a cat over. Go to your local shelter and adopt a kitten, it will have had its shots, be spayed or neutered and you'll be saving a life.

Most posts are legit but you do need to be careful. You are dealing with strangers here and not everyone has good intentions. I would be a little worried about this person. Why would she want to meet at your house in the middle of the night? 

Another thing to keep in mind is that most free kittens are not neutered or vaccinated so you will have to pay to have that done. There is also the possibility that the animal is sick, has parasites etc. 

You might want to save yourself the trouble and just adopt from a shelter. 

OMG.  You're dealing with some stranger on Craig's list AND you have kids??!?

Get thee to the local shelter to pick a kitty - yes, you WILL have to pay a bit, but that payment covers kitty's worming, shots, & sometimes spaying - a BARGAIN!!

You might better go to a local shelter and meet a lot of different cats and take home the one that seems to respond to you and your children. I would want to know why that person is seeking to rehome the kitten. It may be the kitten from hell and not at all what you really want.

You can get lucky on there, but as a rule, NO.

I got a craigslist cat one time, and that thing was horrible. You don't know anything about it, kitten or not, and you don't know how it was fed, treated, if it has any health issues, because chances are, these people don't take them to the vet. Honestly, go to a shelter. Please. Or a rescue. There are SO MANY of them nowadays, you can find one in your area very easily. Rescues have papers, vet care, and the animals they have will be spayed/neutered (if weight and age allow, however, if YOU have to get it done, they will give you lists and discounts, maybe even vouchers to get them fixed). And honestly, MOST cats and kittens are fixed the moment they get into the rescue, so that shouldn't even be an issue.

I don't trust craigslist anymore at all and that was my last cat from them. I have adopted from legit shelters or rescues since then and have had zero issues with my animals.
