Well, since Microsoft does not have a monopoly in desktops, the question is moot. They have the most market share, but they do not have a monopoly.

MS has been the most popular OS since the release of MS Dos back in the 80s
Most software is built to use windows so its HIGHLY unlikely that it will swap to a new OS any time soon.
