Drove without oil cap- possible engine damage?

Before I left for NYC, my Dad checked my oil. I drove 6 hours to nyc on Friday and drove back Monday 6 more hours.

On Tuesday morning, I left for work and suddenly all of the lights on my dashboard came on- check oil, engine... and then I heard a rumbling noise. Then, the car died about a second layer in the middle of the road. It all happened in a couple of seconds.

I called triple a and it was towed to Pep Boys. Pep boys looked at it and said that the cap to the oil is missing and they can’t find it. They said because the cap wasn’t on the oil, oil spewed all over the engine and that’s why the car died. It is going to be taken the dealership to deal with the engine tomorrow.

I assume that my dad didn’t put the cap on tightly and it fell off during my trip or he forgot to put the cap back on. He thinks that is what happened too but can’t remember.

Anyways, how doomed am I? Will this require a new engine or major engine repairs? I think this might get really expensive

Oil got spit out the oil filler hole until there was not enough left to lubricate the engine. The engine seized because of that, and the damage is severe.

If the engine quit because of lost oil, you're in deep

(u no what).....Maybe your dad will feel guilty and pay for a new engine. Lay a guilt trip on him.

    I wish you luck.

New engines are expensive and I doubt it will be covered under warranty.

Nah.  Oil cap is on top of the motor. Storage is in the crankcase at the bottom of motor.  Drive without the cap makes an oily mess on top as oil spits out everywhere.   I assume the car is fairly new, as they would have an oil level sensor inside the motor and once it is below a certain level the engine shuts off to PROTECT ITSELF(and save on manufacturers warranty)...

You just are driving a grease buggy...as oil got everywhere.  So it will stink for a few years (but never rust or squeak). 1000 engine shampoos later MAYBE it will be gone.

.   I am amazed at how many people do not know the ignition key has 2 stages...first is IGNITION and that is where everything gets electricity so lots of dash lights. showing you all systems are ON and are working(the warning light bulbs work)  That is the first stage.    The second stage of the key is turning over the starter motor.  When you let go of the key an internal spring takes it off the starter and it flips back to where all the electrical is on(ignition) as the engine is running, it does not need the starter anymore but needs everything else to work.

. This has always been the way.

Don't worry. New cars are nice. The motor will be replaced & at no expense..IF you still have a warranty.

Very expensive, probably a new engine required. Your Dad screwed up but it was an honest mistake. You should have shut the engine off the second you saw the oil light come on. Not doing so is a foolish mistake.

The engine oil definitely got low, but usually there is a long period of time that the engine oil light comes on before it's actually a major problem. So perhaps there isn't too much damage, and just adding new oil will fix things, but that's the best case scenario. The worst case scenario is that the engine is seized.
