Can a member of a rival political party contact their MP as a member of their constituency to ask for their help?

I need to contact my MP over a personal issue that has affected me - it's based on a decision made by the government, however, the only problem is I'm a member of the rival political party.

Would it be ok for a member of a rival party to contact their local MP on personal issues, or would they more than likely get told to get lost because they're a member of a rival party?

I have contacted him in the past about issues and he has actually sorted them out, however, this was before I became a member of the rival political party.  In a way, I feel bad that I can't support his party from a political stance, but it's not him I have a problem with it's his main party due to what they've done in the past and even now are continuing to do as a whole.

British MPs work for their constituents, it makes no difference if your are Muslim, Labour, SMP or whatever. They work for YOU. They don't ask which party you vote for.

Yes. Your MP is not just the MP for people who voted for him/her.

I find it quite disturbing that you are politically engaged enough to have joined a political party and yet politically ignorant enough not to realise that an MP is responsible for representing the interests of ALL their constituents regardless of their political affiliation. This is such a fundamental thing to our system of government. MPs are public servants, they aren't supposed to take a tribal approach to who they do or do not serve. Your MP is also not going to know that you are a member of a different political party unless you tell them so.

I really wish we had better civics education in schools. We might be in less of a mess if people generally had a better level of understanding.
