Gold Ore is Random Generated from altitudes 0 to 32, (Y Axis). Go somewhere inbetween 32 and 0 (my lucky number was around 20ish), and start digging around.
Other places that have gold is Chests, that you find in Mine shafts, Dungeons. and Pyramids, and in the center of underwater monuments.
