There are very valid reasons why car companies will not rent to people under 23-25 (varies, I think). Also, insurance on your own vehicle, if very young, are quite high. My friend's DIL was in a terrible 3-car accident this week, when a 20-year -old driver fell asleep at the wheel of his car, and plowed into 2 others on the highway. 3 cars totaled. Insurance statisticians will verify that more of these accidents - not to mention DUIs - happen among younger than older drivers. YOU personally might be safe -but you are paying for the behavior of your peers.
When my son (now 40) started teaching, his Union was able to offer a car insurance rate for those 21 to 25 that was much less than the open market. This is because they had negotiated with a company who had their own actuarial staff run the numbers of TEACHERS (and a couple of other professions) at that age - and found them to be more responsible than the general population of that age. Saved him thousand - to be in a Special Users Group. But I have never heard of any for 18 years old.
