Waterproofing fabric: clothes and footware?

I know that hydrophobic sprays provide waterproofing and protection against other liquids. But my question is what, if any, is the difference between various products?

● Scotchguard fabric spray

● Thompson's Water Seal for fabrics

Are they really the same thing with just different brand names? Looking at the cans, they appear to be pretty much the same thing. However, the price differential between them is a few dollars. So I don't want to be penny-wise and pound foolish. Thanks everyone in advance for helping out!

Update:

I know you can use hydrophobic sprays to also protect against paint sticking to the clothes. Will this work with acrylic, oil, and water-based paints? Or is one or more of these not going to be protected? So I'm looking for a hydrophobic spray that will protect against water, mud, and paints.

I didn't know Thompson made such a product. I've used Scotchguard many times, but it's quite difficult to apply it so well the garment is rendered 100% waterproof without it creating gummy patches or running as enough mist is sprayed for complete coverage.

Whichever you buy, it's better to layer multiple coats of the stuff with the can held the right distance away than one thicker application. They're also dead serious about ventilation.

I would not trust any product like this to protect my clothing from paint, water-based or not. Wear old clothes you don't care about getting paint on.
