There is not a season for Opal Mining.  Whoever told you that is nuts.

Opal's are mined 12 months a year here in Australia.  Sure it gets hot in the summer time but down deep in the mines it is nice a cool.

How do I know this??  My Nephew is an Opal Miner at Lightning Ridge and I have been down in is mine.

Are you referring to Australia's opal season...?  The answer is weather.  Opals are found in a region that's only hospitable for a short period of the year due to weather that's otherwise beyond human tolerance.
