I'm from Illinois and it is the midwest. The exception may be Chicago, where I grew up and the surrounding areas that should be on the east coast, or California. Chicago is the 3rd largest city in the U.S. and is way too sophisticated, intelligent and trendy to be in the midwest. Mid-Southern Illinois is rural, boring and has no class.

culturally it's more east while indiana seems to be a blend between the midwest and the east.

The Census Bureau's definition consists of 12 states in the Midwest, as: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
