When tetrachloromethane is shaken with aqueous silver nitrate, no such precipitate is produced. Explain these facts in terms of the types of bonds present in the two chlorides.

NaCl is an ionic compound. When it dissolves in water chloride ions are released and so are available to react with silver ions.
CCl4 is a covalent compound which does not ionize in water, so there are no chloride ions to react with silver ions.
