Why aren't musical theatre actors seen as seriously compared to actors who only perform in straight plays?

The skill set required for musical theatre has overlaps with the skill set for dramatic acting, but there's a lot of vocals and dance skills required for musical works--and more serious, larger scale thespian skills for "straight plays."

When you're auditioning actors for Chicago, they have to be able to sing and dance--it's as important as the acting. When you audition for Network, it's 100% the acting.

    By whose authority?

Most people in show business realize the skill and talent needed to put on a musical.
