Arriva is a big international transport company that runs trains and busses all over the world. They have a franchise on certain areas of the rail network in Britain. So all it means is going north on one of the Arriva trains.

Arriva is a TOC, it doesn't own lines no TOC does. Arriva is a transport company....... they fanchised Northern Rail until they failed ( like many TOCs) and the franchise has been cancelled and is now being Government run

Arriva is not a train line, it is a train operating company.  It simply happens to have decided to call its northern franchise "Northern Rail".
