Cis trans isomerism?
I’m slightly confused about the rules
Should there be at least 1 identical group on both carbons and are these the ones I’m comparing ?
For example the picture below
Is this molecule cis or trans ? and why ?
P.s, I don’t wanna know if it’s E or Z, just cis or trans and why please

As Trevor H said, this compound is cis.
You don't HAVE to have identical groups on both sides of the double bond. For example, if the -CH3 on the right carbon of the double bond was replaced by a -CH2CH3 group, you could still describe the -CH3 and the -C2H5 as being cis to each other.

Cis - look at the double bond = . The two CH3 groups in the C=C carbons are on the same side .
If you take the extreme left C carbon - and swap the H and CH3 - then you have trans - the two CH3 groups ae on different sides of the double bond.
